Selebi Phikwe region is poised for a fresh blow as government will soon relocate services provided by the Selebi Phikwe Economic Diversification Unit (SPEDU) to Gaborone when the rationalisation of State Owned Entities (SOEs) kicks in.
Last week the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mmusi Kgafela confirmed that as part of the rationalisation of SOEs, SPEDU will be merged with Botswana Investment and Trade Center (BITC) and Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO).
The transfer of SPEDU services to Gaborone is anticpated to create major challenges for the already ailing economy of Selebi Phikwe town and neighbouring villages. Consequently, anxiety is reigning supreme among the business community in the SPEDU region. In an attempt by Kgafela to mitigate fears, he explained that the transfer of SPEDU from Selebi Phikwe town will be dealt with due diligence to ensure that the economy and jobs do not suffer from theprocess.
