Internal appointment reflects the depth of the Group’s leadership pipeline

Continental Reinsurance Holdings Limited (‘Continental Re’) has announced the appointment of Poneso Ndonje as Managing Director of its Botswana subsidiary, Continental Reinsurance Botswana, subject to customary regulatory approvals, with effect from 1 September 2026. She succeeds Francis Nzwili in the role.

The appointment reflects the strength of Continental Re’s internal talent pipeline and its approach to succession planning. A Botswana national, Ms Ndonje had been identified as Mr Nzwili’s successor well in advance and developed for the role over a number of years as part of the Group’s long-term succession planning. Her promotion from within supports continuity of strategy, client relationships and underwriting discipline across the Botswana business.

A proven leader promoted from within

Ms Ndonje brings more than 20 years of insurance experience spanning underwriting, claims, technical operations and strategic business development in the Botswana market, including over a decade with Continental Re, where she has risen through the ranks. As Head of Business Development at Continental Reinsurance Botswana, she has led profitable growth, deepened regional partnerships and driven operational efficiency across the subsidiary.

She holds a BCom in Economics and Business Management from North-West University (South Africa), an MSc in International Business from the University of Salford, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Enterprise Risk Management from Botswana Accountancy College. She has also completed an Executive Development Programme at the University of Cape Town and is an Associate Member of the Insurance Institute of South Africa.

“It is a privilege to lead Continental Reinsurance Botswana. I am grateful to Francis for his mentorship and for the strong foundation he leaves behind. My focus is firmly on continuity and disciplined growth: deepening our partnerships and serving our clients.”

“Poneso is an outstanding leader who has grown with this company and earned this role through consistent performance. Her appointment reflects the depth of talent we have built across the Group. I also want to thank Francis for his dedicated service and leadership of the Botswana business.”

Lawrence Nazare, Group Managing Director, Continental Reinsurance Holdings

A decade of distinguished service

Mr Nzwili joined Continental Re more than ten years ago as Head of Operations at the Group’s Nairobi subsidiary, before moving to lead the Botswana business, which he has headed for the past seven years. During his tenure he strengthened the subsidiary’s market position, client relationships and operational capability, helping to establish Botswana as the Group’s home market. He has worked alongside Ms Ndonje through the handover to ensure a seamless transition, and will remain a director of Continental Reinsurance Holdings Limited.

“Leading Continental Reinsurance Botswana has been a highlight of my career. I am proud of what the team has achieved and fully confident that the business is in excellent hands with Poneso. This is a natural time to pass the baton.”

Francis Nzwili, outgoing Managing Director, Continental Reinsurance Botswana

The appointment is subject to the customary approvals of the relevant regulatory authorities. Continental Re’s Board and management are fully aligned in support of the transition.
