Economic crisis hits Consumer Fair 2026

A fight has broken out between Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) leaders, former MP for Gaborone Central Tumisang Healy and party Deputy Secretary General (DSG) Bakani Thukuthe after the latter lodged a complaint asking Tsholetsa House to reprimand the former for misconduct.

Thukuthe’s complaint is that Healy was disrespectful, undermined the authority of the Central Committee and the DSG, and brought the party into disrepute before members, when he posted a comment in a WhatsApp group called Motheo wa Domi. Apparently, when DSG was briefing the BDP group, Healy commented: “Dilo tsa Maun, Jaanong go buisiwa sechaba ka mazaza.” (Maun issues, now the nation is being addressed in shades)”.

On Thursday, Thukuthe lodged a formal complaint with the BDP Disciplinary Committee saying Healy posted contemptuous words against him and the Central Committee on the 11th August 2026.

Not mincing words, Healy on Friday dismissed the complaint as nonsense. He said he is not bothered by the nature of the complaint, adding that he would not be intimidated and remains a committed BDP member.

Nonsense

Healy said the only communicagtion he has received is a letter from the complainant, which is highly prescriptive on the actions that the Disciplinary Committee should take. “What it shows is that there is a bigger agenda. The issue is not the alleged offence but the desired outcome. What is clearly sort is not a remedy for the alleged transgression but to bar me from contesting positions in the party,” said Healy.

Healy concluded that clearly the action is triggered by the looming Bulela Ditswe. “How does he even know that I will be charged unless he knows it’s already prearranged,” he said.

Thukuthe asked the Disciplinary Committee to punish Healy for contemptuous remarks and for defiance after being cautioned by an office bearer. He buttressed: “If found to be holding any position on the party structure, Healy should be removed from that position and be barred from holding/ contesting for any position for a period of two (2) years or whatever your committee deem fit.” He said Healy’s conduct contravenes the BDP General Code of Conduct, specifically Code No.7, 8 and 11 respectively.

In a leaked WhatsApp conversation intended for brokering peace, Healy stood his ground and blatantly told Thukuthe to do whatever he wants to do. He vowed to never apologize.
