One poacher was killed in an anti-poaching incident in Ditshiping village, Okavango Delta, Botswana Defense Force (BDF) said Tuesday.
BDF spokesperson Colonel Tebo Dikole, said the incident happened on August 9 at around 9:45 a.m. local time, about 13 kilometres from Ditshiping village, when the army was engaged in a firefight with armed poachers suspected of being part of a network responsible for cross-border poaching.
Among other tools of their trade recovered from the scene was a hunting rifle, commonly used for killing large game, Dikole said. He also stated that organized poaching of big game such as rhinoceros and elephants, particularly in the Okavango Delta, continues to threaten Botswana’s fauna, and that the BDF is steadfast in its efforts to combat this.
