Gaborone United(GU) has appointed Philimon Makhwengwe as the new club coach following the departure of Nikola Kavazovic who spent some few months with the team before he was forced to resign due to a hostile supporters of the team. Just few months after being in the dugout for Moyagoleele Kavazovic is already out of the club after his life was threatened last weekend by multitudes of GU fans following the team’s 1-0 loss to Jwaneng Galaxy during the Mascom Top8 tournament. The Serbian gaffer was whisked away by the police from the Galaxy stadium on Sunday however midweek he tendered his resignation at the club
Just this week news were rife that Security Systems ‘s high flying coach Daniel Nare might be headed to GU, nonetheless it seems like the move did not materialize even though it was reported that the gaffer was offered a very lucrative contract. Makhwengwe has been with the GU development side after leaving the senior team at the end of last season to pave way for the employment of a new coach. Therefore he will hold the fort until the end of the 2019/20 season before the management can decide whether to look for a new coach or continue with him.
Following Makgwengwe’s arrival it means GU has had three coaches in just a matter of four months. At the start of the season the club was under the leadership of Mandinda Ndlovu but due to unforeseen circumstances he fell sick, a predicament which forced him out of the job. The later on the club then sort the services of Kavazovic who did not last long too and then now comes Da Phil. Makhwengwe takes over from Khalid Nyonzima who was in charge of the team in the premier league midweek fixture agaisnt Extension Gunners.
However Makhwengwe is not new to the GU setup as this will be the third time for him to coach the club. He first led the team in 2012 where he won the then Coca Cola Cup with the team and then returned for the second time last season where he led the team to the Mascom Top8 final though he did lose it to Galaxy. As Makhwengwe makes his return back he finds the team on position seven of the BTC Premiership and have to overcome a 1-0 deficit of Jwaneng Galaxy on the Mascom Top8 if he wants his team to progress to the semifinals next weekend. He will have to work hard and stir the ship out of the tide.
