Bonyongo hailed for his 26 years of Meritorious Service
The outgoing Managing Director of Debswana Balisi Bonyongo has been commended for his Meritorious Service to the world’s leading diamond producer.
He stepped down late last year having served the organisation for 26 years, the last five of which was as Managing Director.
Bonyongo was showered with praises by different notable speakers on Wednesday night in a well dignified sent-off dinner. The occasion also served as a welcome session for the incoming Managing Director, Albert Milton who had until his elevation been the General Manager of Jwaneng mine.
The Minister of Minerals Resources, Green Technology and Energy Security Eric Molale praised Bonyongo for taking Debswana to greater heights and ensuring good relations in the shareholding partnership between Botswana and De Beers.
He said Bonyongo showed character by ensuring the sustainability of the company during the hard times of the 2008 global economic recession.
“It was a very difficult time for the diamond mining sector as well. The diamonds sales were affected but he (Balisi) ensured that there was still sustainability of the mines; hence his amazing contribution to the success of this magnificent organization. As a top notch quality leader, he cannot be taken for granted at all,” charged minister Molale.
Molale also applauded Bonyongo for drafting a clear succession plan as he is confident that Milton will move Debswana forward.
In his address Milton acknowledged that he was taking over from a very great man that he has worked with for quite some time. He said he will always look up to him for guidance and consultation in future.
Milton said he faces immediate tasks of ensuring that the company continues doing well in production and sales segments to help steer the economy forward.
For his part, Bonyongo expressed deep gratitude to the Executive Boards of Debswana and De Beers for affording him opportunity to lead the company, appreciating further the overwhelming support he received from the executives. He was adamant that his successor Milton will move the company high without any doubts.
“I have served so well due to the commendable support from the boards of Debswana and De Beers Group hence I am pretty confident that the new MD will also enjoy the same privilege. He is a great and capable man. He is not new in the fold of Debswana having served as the GM. My support for him will always remain resolute at all times,” he declared.
