Government through Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) has paid compensation amounting to P1 755 000.00 to 241 farmers whose cattle were slaughtered for purposes of Foot and Mouth (FMD) control in Northeast District, Minister of Agriculture Fidelis Molao disclosed this week.
Briefing Parliament on Thursday about progress on the control of FMD outbreak in the Disease Control Zone (DCZ) 6B in the Northeast, Molao said 2 229 cattle have been processed for payments.
According to him, the total cash payments were made as 31st March, adding that the payments are made through Pula Card or Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). 10 000 cattle is expected to be slaughtered.
“A total of 4670 cattle out of an estimated 10 000 have so far been collected from 492 farmers in the following villages , Jackals 2, Mabudzane, Mowana, Tsamaya and Siviya. Three thousand four hundred fifty-eight (3458) of these cattle have been slaughtered at Maun Botswana Meat Commission,” he said.
