April 1 2023 marks President Mokgweetsi Masisi’s five years in office. He will seek a second term in next year’s general elections. Although Masisi has delivered on some of the promises he made in 2019 others remain a pie in the sky, BAKANG TIRO observes.
Briefing the media recently, Masisi has said the number of stalled pledges made by the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) during 2019 elections many of them are as a result of Covid19.
Giving his performance review on Masisi’s presidency from 2019 to date, independent political analyst Kitso Morekisi said Masisi’s presidency like of others has its successes and challenges too.
“Masisi ascended to the presidency in 2018 and just two years later, Covid19 pandemic hit the country and put everything in standstill. However, the pandemic should not been a major excuse of why the electoral promises failed. Since Covid19 was health risk, only developments around health such as building of hospitals could be affected as majority of budget was channeled to Covid19,” he said.
Moreover, he said some of the achievements such as constitutional review, land reforms and live broadcasting of Parliament are very important developments that Masisi must be applauded for.
Meanwhile, he said unemployment particularly among youth will be Masisi’s litmus test going to the 2024 general elections, adding that his government didn’t do enough to create the jobs.
