Makhupe takes over as Bank Gaborone MD

Bank Gaborone has announced the appointment of Olebile Makhupe, the Bank’s first Motswana and female Managing Director, effective 1 July 2023. Olebile will succeed Sybrand Coetzee, who has led the Bank since 2015.

Olebile Makhupe joined Bank Gaborone on 20 February 2023 as the Managing Director Designate and has been working closely with Sybrand Coetzee to ensure a smooth transition in the leadership of Bank Gaborone.

Olebile is a seasoned executive with over 22 years of experience in the corporate world, including financial services. Before joining Bank Gaborone, she was Director of Commercial and Points of Presence at First National Bank Botswana (FNBB). She was also the Director of Corporate and Investment Banking at Rand Merchant Bank Botswana. She has a proven track record of providing transformative leadership to drive business growth and leading high-performing multidisciplinary teams.

She holds a Business Administration Degree in Social Science from the University of Botswana, among other qualifications. Olebile is passionate about driving the growth of the Bank through critical strategies that will benefit all stakeholders – staff, customers, and various communities.

Commenting on the appointment, Bank Gaborone’s Board Chair, Bogolo Kenewendo, said, “I am confident that Olebile Makhupe is the right person to take over as Managing Director of Bank Gaborone. Her wealth of experience and leadership skills make her an ideal candidate for this position. I do not doubt that under her leadership, the Bank will continue to thrive and be a driving force in Botswana’s financial sector.”

On her appointment, Olebile Makhupe said, “I am honoured and excited to be appointed as the new Managing Director of Bank Gaborone. I am passionate about driving growth. I look forward to working with the Bank Gaborone team to build on the Bank’s successes, deliver value to our customers, and contribute to Botswana’s economy and society.”
