Botswana-born actress Angela Atlang who recently joined SABC 2’s Venda soapie Muvhango to play the role of Itseng Motsamai has rubbished rumours from her home country that she is a prostitute.

The actress who is a born-again Christian told Sunday World that she’s been getting calls from church members in Botswana who are reprimanding her for being a prostitute in South Africa.

‘THE STIGMA IS VERY DEEP’

Atlang’s character Itseng Motsamai who is James Motsamai’s (Dingaan Mokebe KaKhumalo) sister is a seductive but hard and gritty woman who plies her trade as a stripper on the show.

The actress says she’s been attacked on social media since she debuted on the soapie on 16 August as James Motsamai’s estranged sister.

Atlang who’s been struggling to get a breakthrough on TV says she’s shocked that people think she’s the character she portrays.

“I am shocked that people are actually thinking that this is my real life.

I am not a sex worker, I am just doing my work. The stigma is very deep,” she says.

‘MINISTERING IS MY PASSION’

The 26-year-old actress told News 24 that she took the role because she loves a good challenge and believes that her work ethic will endear her to the viewers.

Atlang is well-known for giving out bible-based advice in her home country as she’s very spiritual and deeply rooted in Christ.

“I have always been that way ever since I was born. For the first three months of my life, my mom says she had a deep sense of longing to live at a church. When I was born, she took me and raised me at a church house for the first three months of my life,” she says.

Fans of the actress will also be surprised to know that she’s lived in a one-room house, used paraffin lamps and candles, and knows how to make an outside fire to cook.
