Drug free, a youth based organization formed in December 2017, held a workshop last Saturday (24th October 2020) to sensitize youth about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.
The organization prides itself in not only spreading awareness about drugs not being cool, but a movement that inspires the youth and young adults about the dangers, disadvantages and loss of trust in the society, that drug abuse brings about.
In an interview with the organizations Chairperson, Tumelo Sengawane, he said they seek to raise awareness on the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse to the nation at large. “We will be pointing out the effects that drugs have on users, the community at large and how they affect our economy as a country,” he said.
One of their methods is giving motivational talks and life coaching and sometimes using influencers to convey their message to people seeking assistance. Young Strikers, a football team in extension 27, approached Drug Free seeking for help in addressing the junior football teams on alcohol and drug abuse.
Sengawane believes that they are the right people to send the message of refraining from drugs as his team consists of Recovery Coaches, a Therapist, people with past experience of drug use who are on recovery and those that have recovered. So far they have done mall activations mostly in Gaborone to teach youth on the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse. At these functions they use the opportunities to ask for donations and also conduct sales of merchandise to raise funds.
