The Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) government is facing mounting criticism from within its own ranks less than a year into power, with some members and voters accusing President Duma Boko and his executive of recycling individuals from the ousted Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) into key positions.

When the UDC ended the BDP’s decades-long rule in 2024, the opposition coalition rode on a wave of public frustration. Many voters had grown weary of allegations of corruption, nepotism, and economic stagnation under the BDP, and hoped a new government would usher in tangible change, greater accountability, and expanded opportunities for ordinary Batswana.
