Leading mobile telecommunications provider, Mascom Wireless, on Wednesday announced the 2022 Mascom Derby billed for Shashe Horse Track in Maun on 16th April 2022.
Chief Communications Officer, Tebogo LebotseSebego reiterated that sport is part of Botswana’s national pride, and as the leading network provider, Mascom is involved in an array of sport sponsorships including soccer, motorsport, athletics, netball, boxing and horse-racing. She said through sports they engage with stakeholders and do good by giving back to communities to better the lives of ordinary people.
The event returns as part of Mascom’s efforts to support tourism and give back to the communities within which the company operates, after being suspended for two years due to the Covid 19 pandemic, which ravaged the world. It gives Mascom an opportunity to show appreciation to customers that have ensured that the company remains Number 1 and is constantly innovative to suit their changing lifestyles.
“Things have been hard not only on the people but also the economy. Over the past two years we have had to change the way we conduct our business and the way we relate with our people. The restrictions imposed by the pandemic have had a trickle-down effect on small business that have been dependent on events and activities such as the Mascom Derby thus affecting our people immensely. We are hopeful that, as the restrictions are being relaxed, we will see some improvement in the lives of ordinary citizens,” said LebotseSebego.
In existence since 2006, the last Mascom Derby was held in 2019. The year 2022 marks 14 years since Mascom has been supporting the Derby.
“We are very excited to be back this year for yet another eventful Mascom Derby. The 2022 Derby promises an extraordinary show of fashion and cultural diversity. This event is the highlight of the Maun Easter Holidays calendar with tourists coming in from different countries around the world to join in the excitement and experience Maun cuisine, music, cultural fashion extravaganza and the horse race competition,” said LebotseSebego.
Some of the organisations that have been suported include Bonatla Primary School, Okavango Artists Association, Thuso Rehabilitation Centre, Women against rape, Love Botswana Outreach Mission, Feed a child Botswana and Bana ba letsatsi.
“We will continue with the support we have been giving the government of Botswana and the communities at large in curbing the Covid 19 pandemic. We will put in place all the required protocols to make sure we have a safe event in Maun,” she said.
